Many of the products available on the market contain questionable or even harmful ingredients and chemicals that can have negative health effects \u2013 especially for the little ones.<\/span><\/p><h2><b>Why is it important to recognize harmful ingredients in cosmetics?<\/b><\/h2><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Baby skin is about 30% thinner than an adult's. This makes it extremely susceptible to external influences, including chemical ingredients in cosmetics. In addition, babies have a higher surface area, which means they absorb a greater amount of any substance applied to their skin.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Using inappropriate sunscreen products can lead not only to skin irritations and allergic reactions, but also to more serious consequences such as hormonal disruptions or long-term accumulation of harmful substances in the body. And when it comes to the youngest members of the family, blindly trusting the label \"baby product\" is not enough.<\/span><\/p><h2><b>What is behind the concept of \"sun protection factor\"?<\/b><\/h2><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We often choose sunscreen based on how high the SPF (sun protection factor) is, without really considering how that protection is achieved. There are two main types of UV filters used:<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">- Chemical filters that absorb UV rays in the skin and convert them into heat.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">- Mineral (physical) filters that remain on the surface and reflect UV rays.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And while chemical ones often sound \"scientific\" and impressive, the truth is that some of them have been linked to health risks.<\/span><\/p><h2><b>What are the harmful ingredients in sunscreens that you should avoid?<\/b><\/h2><h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oxybenzone<\/span><\/h3><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perhaps the most frequently mentioned \u201cbad name\u201d in the sunscreen industry. Oxybenzone is a chemical filter that has scientific evidence that it penetrates the skin, accumulates in the body and acts as an endocrine disruptor. In other words, it affects the hormonal system. A number of studies have shown that this UV filter has even been associated with an increased risk of breast cancer and a decrease in sperm count in adult men, which further suggests that it should not be used on baby skin.<\/span><\/p><h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Octocrylene and homosalate<\/span><\/h3><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These are two other chemical filters that are often used in conjunction with oxybenzone. Octocrylene has the ability to break down in the skin to benzophenone, a potential carcinogen.
