10 curious and interesting facts about hair

линия с по-голяма среда

Hair is something that everyone has, but few fully understand. Every day we untangle it, wash it, tie it, dry it and sometimes… neglect it. Especially for parents who care for their little ones, the topic of hair often remains on the back burner until tangles, dryness or issues like “When will my baby's hair grow back?“.

Today we have prepared 10 scientifically proven and curious facts about hair - some will make you laugh, others will make you think, and still others - to take even more care of your hair strands - not only yours, but also your child's.

TOP 10 interesting facts about hair

1. Hair is made of something we know well – keratin

Perhaps the most surprising fact is that hair is made up primarily of keratin, the same protein that makes up fingernails. Although it looks soft and delicate, each strand of male and female hair is a miniature engineering marvel. It has no nerve endings or blood supply, which is why we don't feel pain when it's cut. Hair is designed to be resilient, elastic, and in a sense self-sustaining – as long as we take good care of it.

2. Hair grows at a rate of about 1 cm per month

The rate of hair growth varies from person to person and depends on a number of factors – age, nutrition, heredity and even the season. On average, hair grows at a rate of about 1 cm per month, which means that in a year we could add over 10 centimeters in length – if there were no breakage, blooms and sudden changes in care. Children often experience periods of slower growth, especially in the first year.

3. The average person has about 140,000 hairs on their head.

It may seem like your child has a lot or a little hair, but that's completely normal - hair density varies. The average adult has about 140,000 hairs on their head. This number depends on hair color - blondes tend to have more hair follicles, but the hair is finer. Fewer strands do not always mean weaker hair, but simply different hair thickness and hereditary pattern.

4. Hair follicles start working in the womb

Even before we are born, our hair follicles are active. Babies are born with a certain number of follicles – about 5 million throughout the body, with only 100,000–150,000 on the scalp. This means that we cannot “create” new follicles, we can only take care of the existing ones to keep them functioning well. In babies, hair often changes over time – the soft, initial hair often falls out and is replaced by a denser structure in the following months.

5. Hair is healthier than it looks

Each strand of hair can withstand a load of up to 100 grams before breaking. This means that the total hair on a head can withstand up to several kilograms. Of course, this depends on its condition - healthy hair is elastic and resilient, while dry or damaged hair breaks easily. That is why it is important to use hair care products that do not contain aggressive ingredients, especially for children. We advise you to choose products specially designed for delicate baby skin and hair, such as ours. BabyCrema baby shampoos.

6. Hair is not just decoration – it also has a protective function

We often think of hair as an accessory, but the truth is that it performs important biological functions. All the hair on our head is there to protect the scalp from UV rays and mechanical damage.

Eyelashes protect the eyes from dust and sweat, and hair on other parts of the body plays a role in thermoregulation and sensations.

7. The pigment melanin determines hair color

There are two types of melanin that determine what our hair color will be – еумеланин и феомеланин. Redheads have more pheomelanin, blondes have less of both, and brunettes have high levels of eumelanin. Interestingly, over time, melanin production decreases, leading to graying. Some people start going gray as early as their 20s—a completely normal and genetically determined process.

8. The cells in the hair follicle are among the fastest dividing in the human body.

Hair is among the tissues with the fastest cell growth – the cells in the hair follicle can divide every 23 to 72 hours. This is why some changes – such as vitamin deficiencies, stress or hormonal disruptions – have a very rapid impact on the health of the hair. In children, this process is even more sensitive, which requires careful selection of products and routine care.

9. Caring for children's hair starts from day one

Children's hair requires special care, especially in the first months. Using regular shampoos can irritate sensitive children's scalp, as the skin is extremely delicate. It is recommended to use gentle formulas, free of sulfates, parabens and allergens. Look for children's shampoos and bath products, designed specifically for children's delicate skin, with natural and hypoallergenic ingredients.

10. Hair does not grow the same for everyone – everyone has their own genetic rhythm

Although it is said that “we all grow”, hair growth is individual. Some children walk with a “lush mane”, others enjoy their first locks only after a year. This depends on genetics, hormones and even nutritional intake – minerals such as zinc, protein and B vitamins play an important role in this process.

Hair is not just a part of our appearance – it is a reflection of our health, heredity and habits. In children, even more so – it requires attention, patience and the right approach. From its composition to the speed of hair growth, from pigments to follicles – there is science behind every strand.

When we choose how to care for your child's hair, let's do it with the same care we use to choose our hair's food and clothes. Because healthy hair starts with a healthy scalp - and that scalp starts with proper care.
