One of the most famous researchers of traditions and holidays in Bulgaria - Elena Ognyanova - describes the authentic custom "Proshtapalnik", related to the first steps of the child. A young woman with living parents makes a big and a small pita. With floury hands she grabs the child's cheeks - to have thorns. If it is a boy - it goes around the face from both ears to the beard - to grow old like a white-bearded old man. The closest relatives, godparents and children are invited to the celebration. A white cloth is placed on the big cake, various objects, symbols of the individual crafts, art and science are arranged on it. The godmother ties the child's feet with a red ribbon and lets him choose a subject, believing that such a profession he will have in life. Once he has chosen the item, his mother cuts the ribbon, places a white tablecloth in front of the child and rolls the small loaf, encouraging him to take it. This is a symbol that he can now independently seek his bread in life. With the pieces of the pita, the guests are given honey and cheese. If the child is a boy, the mother keeps the white cloth until she shaves for the first time to wipe herself with it. If it is a girl – it is kept until the first cycle, i.e. to the awakening of the feminine.
Today, the custom looks differently in different parts of Bulgaria. It is both a new beginning and the end of the long and complicated process of walking, for which the baby has been preparing for months. It instinctively trains its muscles so that they can take the weight of the body - this is related to baby gymnastics and jumping around 5-6 months, attempts to sit, stand up, crawl.
Depending on temperament and physical readiness, most children attempt to take their own steps between 9 and 11 months. Before you turn back, the baby is already checking the contents of the shelves and cabinets. Be careful! Creating safe conditions for the toddler is the first concern of parents. Secure sharp corners, glass surfaces, sockets, stairs, thresholds. Often after two or three painful falls, children stop trying to walk on their own and return to walking months later. It is therefore important at this stage that parents minimize the risk of injury.
Try to stimulate the child to move as much as possible - from dad to mom and vice versa - this is how coordination develops, the muscles of the back and legs are strengthened, and the baby will do it with pleasure, laugh out loud and be happy . This is a wonderful exercise to quickly teach the child not only to walk, but also to run. It is good to know that walking with weak legs takes too much energy and quickly exhausts the body.
Provide the walker with a path with handrail "railings" that he can freely navigate by holding on to. Just before passing, the baby feels the urge to hold on to something more out of habit. Offer him toys for each hand or interesting empty boxes to give him the illusion of support. So it will take its first steps on its own. Give him space - at home, in the park or in nature.
At this age, curiosity and the desire to explore the world are the main driving force of the little one. The baby wants to learn as much as possible. It expands its exploratory possibilities even by sitting on its own, completes its horizons by crawling, and by standing on its feet, just like an adult, almost everything in the house becomes accessible to it. Mastering new knowledge and skills shows the child's future interest in learning.
