Crusts on babies' scalps are completely normal and fortunately also harmless. However, they need to be removed and addressed, as they can become a problem over time if neglected.
Many young parents, especially those with their first baby, are looking for advice and guidance about crusty babies. In this material, we have tried to give you synthesized information about what they are and how to deal with them.
Crusts, or as you may encounter them as milk crusts or baby scales, are a collection of dead skin cells that arise from the overproduction of sebum (oil) in the skin. They are usually found on the baby's head, but it can also spread to the face and, in rarer cases, to other places on the body. The sooner the problem is treated, the sooner it will go away – if you don't
do nothing for them, they can develop into big thick whitish-yellowish layers/scabs and getting rid of them can be a bit more difficult, already requiring dermatological intervention to cure the problem. Incorrectly treated crusts can lead to neurodermatitis. Neurodermatitis, on the other hand, is medically called atopic eczema. Atopic dermatitis is a chronic skin disease, the causes of which are not yet fully understood.
In infants it sometimes appears for the first time with the crusts. However, it is not necessary to develop neurodermatitis or atopic dermatitis, especially when parents take measures in time.
Many new parents are a little cautious about what and how they want to do and treat their children, but here you don't need to worry - you just need to understand the nature of crusts to avoid unnecessary worries.
Fortunately, it's not too difficult to remove scabs, especially if you catch them in the bud.
To begin with, we recommend using butter, possibly fatty cream, vaseline, or oil, which is spread well and abundantly on the crusts to soften the crusts. Let it sit for a few hours or possibly overnight. If the situation is significantly serious, the crusts are more and thicker, you can additionally use a cotton hat so that the bed linen and pillow are not greasy in the morning, but this is of course a matter of your preferences. After that, you need to carefully "untie" the base with a baby hair brush, it is preferable to use one with natural hair. You don't have to worry about removing crusts from the fontanel of the head.
It may seem unpleasant to sit and remove sticky crusts from such a fragile creature, but it is completely normal and the skin may be red afterwards - which is also normal. Of course, there should be no wounds. Therefore, while cleaning the scalp, be very careful and gentle, and if somewhere you find it difficult to remove the crusts, it is better to wait, apply a moisturizing and oily product, and after they soften, try again.
Of course, they can disappear on their own with time. Be sure to use a gentle washing product and dermatologically tested shampoo, because using an inappropriate shampoo is likely to worsen the condition of the skin.
We advise you to focus on the use of products containing aloe vera and chamomile. Because these ingredients are soothing, and that's exactly what baby's skin needs right now. Products developed especially for babies have a pH level in mind, because the skin of the little ones is so delicate and has not yet adapted to the conditions of the outside world.
With the help and regular use of the right products and proper care, this can take about two weeks to 20 days. If you don't take precautions and use products that are specifically for babies, it can take weeks or even months. Of course, we advise you not to leave this problem without attention, since as we mentioned above, conditions such as neurodermatitis can occur.
If the crusts are inflamed, your doctor may prescribe a combination of a mild corticosteroid. Follow the instructions on the container or package or your doctor's instructions, whichever is most appropriate. Don't worry if the crusts return after treatment. This shows that your baby's glands are still producing extra sebum. Usually, this condition disappears by the baby's twelfth month.
We from Baby Crema try to create products with increased attention to the composition, with care and love for the delicate, silky soft and tender baby skin.
