Heat rash in a baby - everything you need to know

линия с по-голяма среда

Baby skin is extremely delicate and vulnerable, especially during the first few months. A number of conditions can be noticed if her care is not individually tailored. And in this material we will introduce you to one of the most common - heat rash or miliaria.

What is heat rash and what are the symptoms?

Heat rash is a skin condition that occurs in children with profuse sweating – it can also cause eczema and blisters. It is also called miliaria and can be unpleasant as it causes itching. The name itself suggests that it is a disease caused by profuse sweating, through which salts and organic acids are eliminated. It can manifest itself in a mild form, representing only red dots on the skin and slight swelling, in the most serious cases, swelling that blocks the ducts of the sweat glands and small bubbles can appear. Blockage of the ducts leads to stagnation of sweat on the surface of the skin, which can cause significant irritation and constant itching.

Commonly affected areas of the body are the neck, nape, groin and abdomen, although the rash often spreads to the rest of the body.

The most common reasons for the appearance of sweating are the increase in external temperature, the internal body temperature that rises, fever and too heavy and dense clothes that create excessive sweating, for this reason it is a disorder that can also occur during autumn and winter. This is a more common disease in young children, especially newborns, because the pores of children are smaller than those of adults.

– Miliaria rubra is the most common form. This condition is characterized by blockage of the sweat glands near the surface of the epidermis or dermis. It causes changes in the appearance of the skin - discoloration, redness and itching.

– Milaria crystallina is the most severe form of heat rash. It occurs when the sweat glands in the epidermis are blocked. This form of heat rash has the potential to develop small, clear or white blisters.

– Miliaria profunda is the most severe form of heat rash, but it is rare. The dermis is soaked with sweat, which causes severe redness and burning.

What helps with heat rash?

A heat rash in babies is usually not dangerous, but should be taken as a sign that your little one is too hot. To prevent the baby from getting heat stroke, parents should take care of the cooling. This is how:

– A cool bath cools the body and helps against itching. Then gently dry the baby without rubbing or pressing with the towel.

– Periodically dry the child with a cool towel.

– Avoid direct sunlight.

– Dress the child in loose clothes made of natural and soft fabrics.

– Do not use creams and lotions that are too heavy in formula and will clog pores again.

To relieve itching and speed healing, a cream containing zinc and silica can help a baby with heat rash. In addition, parents should prevent their children from scratching as much as possible so that inflammation does not develop.

A doctor's visit is usually not necessary. However, if the rash does not go away for several days or even worsens, and there is also a fever, then you should take your child to the doctor.

Also watch out for inflammation and swelling, which can be symptoms of a bacterial infection caused by the baby's scratching.

How to prevent heat rash?

Since it is quite common for babies to sweat a lot, parents should follow some guidelines to prevent sweating. If you see that your child has irritated skin and is scratching a lot, you should take him to a pediatrician. After a visit to the doctor, you can treat your child according to his recommendation. You can also follow these tips:

– If it's hot or you live in a very humid climate, you need to make sure your baby stays cool and dry. Dress him in light, loose clothing, preferably cotton.

– Keep your home at a comfortable temperature and avoid heating with fans or air conditioners (if the temperature is suitable).

– Prevent diaper rash and change their diapers often.

– Choose a suitable shower gel for sensitive baby skin.

– Avoid too much sun and always protect his skin with sunscreen lotion and appropriate clothing.

Baby's skin is extremely sensitive and easily affected by external influences - from temperature to cosmetics. To prevent heat rash, bet at a temperature of 20-22 °C, which is the recommended temperature. Cosmetics must also be tailored to the delicacy of children's epidermis and dermis.
