Summer is the most awaited season for children (and to be honest, not only for them). Sunny days seem to be made for laughter, fun and unforgettable memories. But while little ones indulge in carefree summer activities, we as parents have the important task of finding the balance between fun and safety. If you need some inspiration for fun games and activities, as well as a quick refresher on important safety rules under the sun - keep reading!
Sometimes the summer heat is so unbearable that even the most heat-loving people prefer to stay cool at home. But that doesn't mean the fun ends. Here's what you can do at home:
Creative projects: Draw, apply, model with clay or plasticine. Make collages from scraps, drawings and photos. Learn to knit, sew or make jewelry. Create beautiful things from natural and recycled materials. Let the creative urges fly!
Culinary experiments: Involve children in the magic of cooking. Teach them to knead, make stew, bake cookies or gingerbread. Experiment with new recipes and products. Teach them to set the table beautifully. This is not only a great way to spend time together, but also teach them some important skills.
Board games: Here's an activity that everyone will quickly fall in love with. Board games are much more than a fun way to pass the time on hot summer days. They strengthen bonds in family or between friends and help you create shared moments that you'll remember long after the summer is over.
Warm weather and sunny days attract children outside like a magnet. Here are some ideas for fun outdoor games that will get them moving, laughing and burning off their energy:
Sports outside: Organize mini-tournaments of soccer, basketball, volleyball or frisbee for your children and their friends. Have running races, sack jumps, even relay races - this will bring the little ones together even more. Be sure to provide shade and plenty of water for the little athletes.
Growing plants: If you have a yard, set aside a corner where the children can create their own little garden. Let them plant seeds or seedlings of their favorite vegetables, fruits or flowers and learn how to care for them. If you live in an apartment, you can plant herbs and flowers together in pots or boxes on the balcony. Caring for plants will teach children responsibility, perseverance and patience.
Water games and entertainment: Whether you're by the sea, have a house with a yard or just a sunny balcony, water games are a favorite method of cooling off. Harness the full arsenal at your disposal: from water guns to lawn watering hoses. Fun is guaranteed!
Safety comes first when it comes to children. And the summer season has its own specific risks that we must anticipate. Here are some important things to keep in mind:
Selection of suitable places to play: We all know that play areas should be away from busy streets. Sometimes we forget, however, that gardens and parks could also harbor dangers, such as ticks or even poisonous plants, such as the ubiquitous zokumi (oleander).
Check out the play facilities: Check children's equipment for potentially dangerous items such as rust, broken parts, protruding nails or sharp edges. Make sure the sand in the sandboxes is clean.
Adult supervision: Even in a safe environment, children should always be supervised by a responsible adult, especially younger children. Watch them from the side without restricting them too much. Be ready to intervene if you sense potential danger. Remind them of basic safety rules without scaring them unnecessarily.
The other big risk of summer is the dangers of intense solar radiation. It is important to protect children from burns, overheating and dehydration. This is how:
Appropriate clothing and accessories: On hot days, dress children in light, loose clothing in light colors. The most suitable are natural materials such as cotton and linen, which "breathe". A hat with a brim, sunglasses are mandatory.
Sunscreen products: Choose quality children's sunscreen lotion or a cream with a broad spectrum of protection and a high factor (at least SPF 30, and even better SPF 50). Remember that application is just as important as choosing the right product. Apply a sufficient amount to all exposed parts of the body, not missing areas such as ears, nose, toes. Renew protection every 2 hours or after bathing/profuse sweating.
Water and shade: Encourage children to drink plenty of water regularly. Hydration is key to preventing heatstroke and exhaustion. Take frequent breaks in the shade, especially during peak sunshine hours between 10am and 4pm. Avoid physically demanding activities during the hottest hours. At the first signs of overheating (red skin, profuse sweating, dizziness), immediately seek coolness and give the child fluids to drink.
Watch out for heatstroke: Overheating is a serious threat – especially for the little ones. Learn to recognize the symptoms of heat stroke – high body temperature (over 40 degrees), red and dry skin, severe headache, rapid pulse, confusion, nausea, loss of consciousness. If you notice such signs, seek medical help immediately and cool the child with moist compresses and a fan until the doctor arrives. Heatstroke can be life-threatening, so be alert.
Prevention is always key, but sometimes minor accidents happen even with the most careful preparation. Here's what you should know:
For scratches and abrasions: Wash the wound thoroughly with lukewarm water and soap. If bleeding profusely, apply pressure with clean gauze until it stops. Dry and disinfect with a suitable antiseptic (e.g. Rivanol). You can apply a healing cream and bandage.
In case of insect bite/sting: Remove the stinger if any remains. Wash the area thoroughly with cold water and soap. Apply a cold compress for 10-15 minutes to relieve pain and swelling. If there is a severe allergic reaction (shortness of breath, swelling of the face and neck, rash all over the body), seek medical help immediately.
The summer months are a precious gift in which we should make the most of the opportunities for games and shared adventures. We hope these ideas and tips help you create a truly unforgettable summer for your children, filled with sunny smiles and positive experiences. Enjoy the magic of the season with the help of some simple safety rules and a little advance preparation.
